England and Scotland have met in 128 international matches - and yet the Auld Enemies have clashed at the Rugby World Cup just once.

The two rivals meet every year in the Six Nations championships but will play each other for the first time in 20 years at the global showpiece on Saturday. Their only Rugby World Cup meeting came at Murrayfield in 1991.

In an intensely physical and fraught match fullbacks Gavin Hasting and Jonathan Webb both landed two penalties before England fly-half Rob Andrew kicked the decisive drop goal to claim a 9-6 victory and progress to the final, where they lost to Australia at Twickenham. The game was perhaps best remembered for an awful sliced penalty attempt from the otherwise reliably accurate Hastings.

The overall record between the sides sees England boasting 62 victories compared to Scotland's 48 with 18 draws since their first meeting in Edinburgh in 1871 when Scotland won by one goal.

Scotland have beaten England just three times since the turn of the millennia and just once in their last five encounters. However shoot-outs have become increasingly close affair in the last two seasons. England edged out Scotland 22-16 at Twickenham in March while Dan Parks secured a 15-15 draw at Murrayfield the previous year.

If Scotland are to maintain their run of reaching the quarter final of every World Cup, they must beat England by eight points or more. However they have not achieved that feat since Murrayfield in 1986.
