Scotland's Joe Ansbro has been ruled out of Saturday's Six Nations opener against England with a back injury.

The London Irish centre, who won the most recent of his nine Test caps against England at the Rugby World Cup, was an injury doubt before joining up with the rest of the Scotland squad and will now return to his club for further treatment.

Scotland lead physiotherapist Paul McGinley said: "Joe came into our camp in St Andrews last week affected by a back injury which will need a longer period of rehabilitation. This will be undertaken at his club and he will be re-assessed following the England game."

On a more positive note, Edinburgh back-row forward David Denton has recovered from injury and will train with squad today as they step up their preparations for the Murrayfield showdown.

Denton was a late withdrawal from his club's Heineken Cup victory over London Irish eight days ago after he suffered mild hamstring discomfort but he has been given the all clear to resume full training.

Scotland coach Andy Robinson, who will name his starting line-up on Tuesday, has already been stripped of the services of back-row Kelly Brown, fly-half Ruaridh Jackson through injury and another player who will play no part in Saturday's match is prop Alasdair Dickinson, who has a shoulder injury.
