Former Australian fly-half Michael Lynagh has admitted how lucky he is to be alive after suffering a stroke two weeks ago.

Lynagh was admitted to hospital on April 18 and spent six days in intensive care. The World Cup winner was discharged yesterday with his neurologist Dr Rob Henderson labelling Lynagh's progress "amazing".

"I understand how lucky I am," Lynagh said. "I'm just very, very fortunate. As Rob said to me, 'You haven't just dodged a bullet; you've dodged a cannonball'.

"It's been a tough couple of weeks. I must say, I'm very pleased to be here."

It is unclear when Lynagh will be cleared to return to England and he has revealed that his eyesight has been harmed as a result of the stroke.

"My brain has been damaged in certain places," he said. "45% of sight to the left has been lost, hopefully over time my eyesight will improve."
