Hurricanes hooker Motu Matu'u has been sidelined for at least six weeks after fracturing his arm in Friday's 18-16 loss to the Stormers in Palmerston North.

Matu'u's right forearm fracture further depletes the Hurricanes' stocks at hooker, with first-choice Dane Coles already out with a fractured cheekbone.

The Hurricanes leave Wellington on Saturday for their two-week tour of South Africa, with games against the Bulls in Pretoria and the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

Ash Dixon and Reggie Goodes will take over hooking duties in the 25-strong squad, with one more player to be confirmed.

Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett called on Southland hooker Jason Rutledge as cover earlier this year when Coles and Matu'u were in doubt with ankle and shoulder injuries respectively.

All Blacks wing Julian Savea will also travel to South Africa after appearing in Wellington District Court on Monday charged with assaulting his partner, and mother of his child, earlier this month.

He didn't enter a plea, and will next appear in court on May 15.
