Australia lock Sitaleki Timani has been ruled out of the three-Test series against the British & Irish Lions owing to a broken thumb.

The Tonga-born 26-year-old suffered the injury during the New South Wales Waratahs' 23-22 loss to the Crusaders on Friday.

Timani requires surgery on his right thumb, meaning he will miss the series against the Lions, which begins in Brisbane on June 22.

The Wallabies expect him to be available for the Rugby Championship starting in August. Timani was one of three players withdrawn from the preliminary Wallabies squad on Sunday.

Melbourne Rebels captain Scott Higginbotham was another change, but his shoulder injury needs to be reassessed before his availability is known.

The 25-man squad will become 31 when the final six players are added on June 11.

ACT Brumbies scrum-half Nic White will join the Wallabies camp in their preparations in Sydney on Tuesday, while troubled Melbourne Rebels fullback Kurtley Beale is also training with the squad.
