Japanese international Male Sau has joined the Melbourne Rebels until the end of the season, the club confirmed on Saturday.

New Zealand-born Sau, 26, can play either fly-half or in the centres and moved to Japan to ply his trade for Yamaha Jubilo for the 2008-2009 season.

"I think I will adapt fairly quickly, and I hope that I will be able to perform well at Super Rugby level," he said.

Sau previously played for Counties Manukau in New Zealand's ITM Cup, as well as representing New Zealand at numerous underage levels.

He has scored 23 tries in 46 matches in Japan's Top League, and starred for the Japanese in their upset of Wales last year, as well as playing against the All Blacks and Scotland in a 13-match international career.
