Newport Gwent Dragons have confirmed that Andy Powell will join them from the start of next season.

Powell, 32, has had a chequered career where his off-field activities have too often overshadowed and impacted on his sporting one. Capped 23 times for Wales, he has increasingly flitted from club to club without settling. In April 2013 he switched codes, signing a three-year contract with Wigan but this was terminated in January.

Joining Newport represents a return home for Powell who started his club career there. "I am extremely delighted to be back in Wales. I have very fond memories of playing for Newport RFC and can remember the great support we had from fans when I previously played for them," he said. "I am very excited for the challenges that lie ahead and look forward to challenging the other Welsh regions for silverware."

Dragons head coach Kingsley Jones said: "I am very excited that we are bringing Andy back to Gwent to play. He has the X-Factor and brings a lot to the team dynamics not forgetting his great ball carrying skills. He'll be coming back here to challenge the likes of Taulupe Faletau for a first-team spot as well as adding experience to the squad."
