Highlanders prop Chris King has signed with French club Montpellier on a one-year deal.

Montpellier's website said King's arrival would bolster the team's front-row, already strengthened with the signing of French international David Attoub.

King, 33, started his provincial career in 2002 with Canterbury and has also represented Otago and Taranaki, along with 51 games for Southland. After three seasons with the Crusaders, King played for the Highlanders since 2005 and brought up his 100th cap for the franchise this season.

The Highlanders were already on the hunt for front-rowers, having already lost Craig Millar for the remainder of the season through a shoulder injury. Argentina international Matias Diaz was initially signed for this season only, and any replacement for King is likely to come through the national provincial championship.
