New South Wales Waratahs have commenced talks with Japanese club Toyota Shokki in a bid to lure Mark Gerrard home, News Corp has reported.

Toyota Shokki, where Gerrard has spent two years, are happy to release Gerrard, 31, as early as February, aligning perfectly with the start of the 2015 Super Rugby season, News Corp reported, noting the former Wallabies back was likely to be signed on a supplementary contract, as back-rower Stephen Hoiles signed at the beginning of this year.

Gerrard played two matches for New South Wales during a stint from 2001-2002, before playing with the Brumbies and Melbourne Rebels, and Waratahs coach Michael Cheika now must assess whether his signature should become a club priority.
