Benn Robinson's continual omission from the Wallabies side may have confused many rugby pundits, but head coach Ewan McKenzie has revealed exactly why the loosehead prop has struggled for selection in recent times.

During a training session in Sydney ahead of Australia's Test against South Africa, McKenzie told Fairfax that Robinson's time out of the side was due to him not coming to terms with new scrum laws.

"In the scrum area with the transition of laws over the last 12 months, some people have reacted in different ways. He has taken a bit long to adjust," McKenzie told Fairfax Media. However, McKenzie was quick to add: "That was in June. Since that time he has made adjustments."

McKenzie also noted that his forward packs for the upcoming matches will be selected based on team chemistry rather than just pure strength as he believes the Wallabies need to find the perfect scrum combination.

"You can change individuals around and you get different outcomes straight away. One person makes a difference. The scrum changes and the opposition scrum changes as well," McKenzie said.

The Wallabies will have their final preparations on Friday before flying to Cape Town on Monday where they'll meet the Springboks. They will then head to Mendoza a week later for their return match against Los Pumas.
