Cardiff Blues coach Mark Hammett has confirmed new signing Gareth Anscombe will start at full-back for the region in their Pro12 match against Edinburgh this weekend.

New Zealand-born Anscombe, who can also play fly-half, has moved to Cardiff in a bid to secure a place in the Wales World Cup squad next year. He qualifies through his Welsh mother. Anscombe spoke on Wednesday about his decision to leave New Zealand and his ambitions with Wales.

"It was tough," he said, "I said in the past a great opportunity potentially presents itself. I spoke to a lot of people I respected and trusted. I guess I wasn't too sure what would happen in New Zealand and I thought I was still relatively young and could come over here and hopefully play well for Cardiff and see what happens. It has been well-publicised I can play for Wales but first thing's first I have got to play well at club level for that to happen."

Anscombe also showed off his Welsh roots, saying he was named after legendary scrum-half Gareth Edwards.
