Nick Abendanon crowned European Player of the Year

Clermont Auvergne fullback Nick Abendanon has been named European Player of the Year. 

Abendanon played a key role in helping Clermont Auvergne reach the European Rugby Champions Cup final and scored an impressive solo effort in their 24-18 defeat to Toulon. The individual award caps an impressive season for the two-cap England fullback who moved to Clermont from Bath ahead of this season.

Abendanon topped four of the tournament's attacking categories racking up 112 carries, 929 metres made with ball in hand, 13 clean breaks and also beating 34 defenders. He also scored four tries.

"It's obviously a huge honour to receive this accolade, especially with the great players who have received it in years past," Abendanon said. "I want to thank everyone involved at Clermont for the help, support and character shown throughout the year.

"I realise that this is an individual award but it is, for me, a recognition of the players around me who have shown such resolve and endeavour during a tough European season. I would therefore like to accept it on behalf of the whole squad as a small consolation for Saturday's disappointment."

Abendanon beat 2014 winner Steffon Armitage, Jamie Heaslip, Fritz Lee and Billy Vunipola to the award.
