Cory Jane's Rugby World Cup dream remains alive after the winger was diagnosed with a serious ankle sprain.

Jane, who was named in the 41-man All Blacks squad last month, limped off with an injury to his left ankle when he turned out for the New Zealand Barbarians in their match against the Maori All Blacks in Auckland on Saturday.

The veteran Hurricanes winger underwent scans on Monday and later revealed the diagnosis to be just a "nasty sprain".

Jane struggled for fitness during the Super Rugby season and played no part in the Hurricanes' finals campaign. Meanwhile, Highlanders flyer Waisake Naholo and Hurricanes team-mate Nehe Milner-Skudder announced themselves as All Blacks contenders with scintillating seasons.

Naholo was rewarded with a Test debut against the Pumas last Friday but a broken leg has seen since seen him ruled out for the remainder of the season.
