Leicester Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill has backed fly-half Owen Williams' claims for a Six Nations call-up with Wales.

Rhys Priestland's sabbatical at Bath and Gareth Anscombe's injury could open the door for Williams as Wales seek a back-up for incumbent No.10 Dan Biggar.

The former Scarlets man has made an impressive return from an eight-month injury layoff, \scoring 14 points in the Tigers' recent win over Wasps.

And as Wales head coach Warren Gatland ponders his option, Cockerill believes Williams would represent a more than able deputy.

"I want all our lads to have ambitions to play Test rugby. I support that," the former England international was quoted as saying by Wales Online.

"If Owen plays well enough and he has the opportunity to play for Wales, then great. I hope he has the chance to take it.

"He's in a good environment, he's worked really hard, he's improved as a player, he's come out of himself.

"He's a very skilled player and a very intense and intelligent player. He understands the game really well and he's been fantastic for us.

"I certainly think if Wales came calling, with the form that he's showing and a few more games under his belt, there's no reason why he can't get that opportunity."
