Danny Cipriani has revealed agreeing to return to Wasps from Sale at the end of the season was "the hardest decision I've ever had to make".

Wasps confirmed on Tuesday that Cipriani would end his three-year association with the Sharks and head back to the club that launched his career.

Cipriani has rebuilt his reputation with Sale, following a mixed spell in Australia, and the England playmaker paid tribute to director of rugby Steve Diamond as he outlined his intention to finish his Sharks career on a high.

The 28-year-old wrote on Twitter: "This is the hardest decision I've ever had to make. I've loved every part of being at Sale and learnt so much on and off the field which has played a huge part in me growing up.

"When coming back from Australia choosing Sale was the best thing I could have done. It's been an amazing journey and one that isn't finished. I'll be giving everything I have for the rest of the season, it's such a wonderful club and Dimes [Diamond] makes it work.

"I have so much respect for what he does. It's a great team who I've loved playing with and will continue to do so."

Cipriani has scored 697 points in 91 appearances for Sale, helping him become a fans' favourite at the AJ Bell Stadium.

"The fans are brilliant!" he added. "I've met so many young and enthusiastic fans who love the club. That's what rugby is and should be about."
