Jaques called in as cover for Eales

ACT Brumbies second-rower Troy Jaques was called into the Wallaby training squad today because of the injury to captain John Eales.

The uncapped Jaques, 28, joined the Australian camp in Canberra but team officials said Eales' back injury was on the mend and he was a "70 per cent" chance of playing the second Test against Argentina on Saturday night.

While inside-centre Tim Horan (foot) has been ruled out of the Test, flyhalf Stephen Larkham (ankle) was hopeful he could take his place. All three players were injured in the first Test win at Ballymore last Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Wallaby second-rower Tom Bowman has signed a two-year contract with New South Wales, killing off rumours of a move to Queensland.

Bowman, 23, who has played 16 Tests for Australia, had a disappointing Super 12 season this year with the Waratahs, which saw him dropped from the team at one stage.

The Waratahs have also secured the services of 28-year-old prop Jason Reilly for next year.

The signings come as a welcome boost for the Waratahs ahead of Tuesday night's clash with Argentina at the Sydney Football Stadium.

"Tom has been running into fine form in recent matches after overcoming serious injuries last year and again this year," said NSWRU chief executive Danny Harley today. "Tom proved in 1998 that he is a world class lock and we're delighted he'll be part of the Waratahs.

"Jason is highly regarded by the Australian selectors and would have been pressing for Test team honours if he didn't succumb to an Achilles tendon problem."

The agreements follow the earlier signings of centre Nathan Grey, half back Chris Whitaker, breakaway Phil Waugh and prop Richard Harry.
