Quinnell to join Lions selection team
September 8, 2000

Former Wales and British Lions forward Derek Quinnell is set to become part of Graham Henry's management team for next summer's Lions tour.

Quinnell will be one of four selection advisors for this season, according to the Western Mail. Henry will head a seven-strong selection panel that will pick a 37-strong squad for the 10-match sortie to Australia next summer. The party should be announced on April 22.

Quinnell, who made 23 appearances for Wales and was capped by the Lions during the historic Test series success over New Zealand in 1971, fulfilled a similar role before the 1997 tour and he will be joined by a selection advisor from England, Ireland and Scotland.

The rest of the selection panel will consist of Henry, forwards' coach Andy Robinson, who is England's coach, and team manager Donal Lenihan, the ex-Ireland captain.

Henry has also expanded on the details of his discussions with McGeechan and Scotland's director of rugby Telfer.

He said, "We talked about things like the selection of the side and the pre-tour organisation. I have already had a meeting with Donal and Andy in Ireland to set up all the bits and pieces of organising a tour.

"I spoke to the Scots about selection and what they did last time, the organisation, information gathering about the opposition and what they did in the week prior to touring."

Henry also revealed that if there were two players of equal ability, the one chosen would be the stronger personality.

He said, "Last time they looked at the characters of people as well as players who would add to the tour as people. We will do the same."

Henry was appreciative of the information supplied by McGeechan and Telfer, saying, "They were superb. I can see why they are held in such high esteem."

The selection panel will meet each month, starting in November.
