Highlanders lock James Ryan is battling to stay in the All Blacks frame for the rugby World Cup.

It was confirmed today Ryan would be sidelined for the remainder of the Super 14 after an injury to his left knee ligament in the match against the Chiefs last weekend.

"I'm extremely disappointed about the injury and not being able to finish the competition with the team," Ryan said in a statement after meeting doctors this week to discuss the injury and rehabilitation time.

"I will be meeting the specialists again over the next few days to finalise details of the best way forward for me."

Otago lock Tom Donnelly has been drafted in by the Highlanders as a replacement for Ryan.
