Preview: Romania rally to down Portugal
September 25, 2007

Both teams are out of contention for the quarterfinals, and the game at Toulouse Stadium marks the end of the tournament for debutants Portugal.

Portugal has made only three changes and one positional switch for this clash against their European nations Cup rivals.

"We have to be ambitious as well as being realistic," coach Tomaz Morais said.

"We beat them (Romania) by one point in Lisbon (16-15 in 2003). We've also lost to them by numerous points, but we are going to try to surprise Romania. We're capable of winning."

Their inspirational skipper Vasco Uva has been sidelined with a broken left hand suffered in last Wednesday's 31-5 loss to Italy in Paris.

Joaquim Ferreira, Portugal's most capped international, comes in to lead the side from hooker in his farewell match.

Pedro Leal returns at full-back for the Pool C match with Miguel Portela starting on the wing and Diogo Coutinho taking over from Vasco Uva in the backrow.

Diogo Coutinho, who started against New Zealand, comes in at blindside flanker, displacing Tiago Girao, who takes over at No. 8 in Uva's absence. The only change in the backs sees veteran center Miguel Portela on the left wing for Antonio Aguilar.

Uva's forced withdrawal means only three of the Lobos will have started in every match: Prop Ruben Spachuk, Goncalo Uva, and inside center Diogo Mateus.

Romania will also start without their regular skipper as Sorin Socol has been dropped to the reserves bench to try and give him a rest before the Oaks complete their Pool C games against New Zealand next Saturday.

Romania started the same XVs which lost to Italy 24-18 and to Scotland 42-0 but has made two changes and two positional switches with No.8 Ovidiu Tonita taking over the captaincy.

Agen prop Cezar Popescu and Pau hooker Razvan Mavrodin make up a new frontrow with Bogdan Balan, Cosmin Ratiu fills in at lock for Socol, and Alexandru Tudori replaced the 51-capped Florin Corodeanu in the No. 6 jersey.

With flyhalf Ionut Tofan the third Romanian to be rule dout of the tournament with injury (ruptured bicep), Dan Dumbrava was given a start and regular flyhalf Ionut Dimofte placed at center. Catalin Fercu was switched from the right wing to the left to make room for Catalin Nicolae's World Cup debut and sixth cap.

Romania was disappointed with its lackluster show against Scotland, starting with conceding a first-minute try at Murrayfield and finishing without scoring a point for the first time in cup history.

Romania, who have previously played at every World Cup, has actually won a match at every tournament except for 1995.

"A win against Portugal is a must," Romania coach Daniel Santamans said. "We need to play good rugby to win because Portugal are not an easy team at all to take on. If we don't win now, that would be the worst ever Romanian participation at the World Cup.

"Portugal showed they play with pride and passion, they didn't fear the All Blacks and played as good as they could. They will play with the same pride against us and will try to make history by winning. We need to treat this game with great respect and play our best rugby to win. There is no room for another defeat.
