After serving an apprenticeship under Wallabies legend George Gregan at the Brumbies, Burgess struck out for Sydney and the Waratahs in 2007. Having previously represented Australia at Under-21 level, he soon came to the attention of the Wallabies' selectors and made his Test debut against Ireland in June 2008.
Injury shortened his debut international season but Burgess remained a key player for New South Wales and Australia, although he was forced into a watching brief at Test level following the emergence of Will Genia. Having signed a deal with the Australian Rugby Union through to the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Burgess announed in April of that year that he would be joining Top 14 giants Toulouse following the tournament.
Burgess impressed throughout the 2011 Super Rugby season but fractured his hand late on in the campaign. After facing a race against time to be fit for the World Cup, Burgess is firmly back in the reckoning for the scrum-half berth - despite the form of Will Genia - having been named in the final 30-man squad for the World Cup.
