Chiefs snap up veteran Umaga

The Chiefs have confirmed the signing of former All Black skipper Tana Umaga for the inaugural Super Rugby season.

Umaga returned to New Zealand with Counties Manukau in June after a stint as player-coach with Top 14 side Toulon.

His form in this season's ITM Cup saw Super franchises take note and the Chiefs have taken the plunge and offered the 37-year-old another crack at the title. Prior to his time in France Umaga was a mainstay for the Hurricanes between 1996 and 2007.

"I am pleased that I am still able to contribute both on and off the field," he said. "Playing for the Chiefs was a good fit as I will be able to continue to work with some of the key Counties- Manukau players, like Fritz Lee and Tim Nanai Williams.

"I have enjoyed my time both playing and coaching during the ITM Cup and it is great to have been given the opportunity to be part of the new expanded Super Rugby structure."

Chiefs boss Ian Foster is excited to utilise Umaga's experience and leadership credentials in the forthcoming season.

"We've been really impressed with Tana as a player and his impact with Counties on his return from Europe," he said. "We believe he will be a valuable asset to the team as he brings a high level of experience, knowledge and leadership."
