Genia wants to keep Reds captaincy

Will Genia has stated he will not give up the Queensland Reds captaincy easily as coach Ewen McKenzie decides whether to hand it back to James Horwill for the upcoming Super Rugby season.

Horwill's season-ending injury early in last year's Super 14 season saw Genia stand in for the lock, but the Reds' incredible rise and flashy brand of rugby - inspired by Wallabies halves Genia and Quade Cooper - could convince McKenzie to stick with the diminutive No.9.

Genia is not backward in his stance that he would like to keep the role despite Horwill's return to the team.

"I was proud to captain Queensland last year and if I'm not captain I'll be a bit disappointed," Genia told the Sunday Mail. "The big thing is, though, everyone has to lead in their own way. We all have to put our hands up."

McKenzie revealed he was undecided and even included prop Ben Daley as a possible contender. The coach, hailed for his role in turning around the Reds since his arrival last year, said he was pleased to have a touch call to make since it meant his squad was full of leadership potential.

"We've got more (options) this year than we did last year," he said. "You want to identify leaders by name but you also hope there will be a bunch of players who lead by example, by enthusiasm and by experience. It was tragic what happened to James last year but it gave Will an opportunity and he stepped up. That's how it works."
