All Blacks centre Sonny Bill Williams made it three wins from three in his professional boxing career with a unanimous points decision against Scott Lewis at the Gold Coast Exhibition Centre in Australia.

The 25-year-old heavyweight, who will make his eagerly-awaited Super Rugby debut with the Crusaders next month, added Lewis' scalp to those of Garry Gurr and Ryan Hogan following a tougher-than-expected six round contest in front of a reported crowd of 5,000 fans.

Williams weathered an early storm from the 36-year-old Lewis, a forklift truck driver from Sydney, before dominating the later rounds thanks to his superior reach and some notable combinations.

"It was definitely a top fight, a lot of people thought this fight was a joke ... but hopefully we put on a show for the crowd,'' said Williams after all three judges awarded the fight to him - scoring the fight 60-55, 60-55 and 60-54.

Williams has set his sights on becoming a star in the ring - following a headline-grabbing stint in rugby league and now in union - and his mentor and trainer Anthony Mundine has backed him to do just that. "He's got the talent. He can do (anything) he wants to do," he said.

Williams is set to return to the Crusaders' pre-season camp in Christchurch on Sunday where the stress-related leg injury he picked up on the All Blacks' end of year tour will be assessed by medical staff. He also has another boxing bout written in to his current contract with the New Zealand Rugby Union that is likely to see him re-enter the ring before the Rugby World Cup later this year.
