Weepu steps up comeback

All Blacks scrum-half Piri Weepu will make his long-awaited return from injury on Saturday.

The 27-year-old is set for 20-30 minutes off the bench for Wellington club side Wainuiomata in their match against Poneke.

Weepu suffered a fractured leg and dislocated ankle while in action for Wellington against Taranaki at Westpac Stadium five months ago and is set to get through three games in a week as he eyes a Super Rugby return for the Hurricanes.

His second outing will be for the 'Canes' development side against the Chiefs on Wednesday before another game with Wainui the following Saturday.

"I'm looking forward to it," he said. "I've been counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds to play club rugby. I just want Saturday to hurry up. I'm getting quite excited."

The Hurricanes must get through matches with the Cheetahs and Sharks before Weepu's likely home return against the Queensland Reds on April 30.

"I'm not travelling to Africa. Hopefully I'm available, and if the coaches select me, my comeback game will be against the Reds," he said.
