Rebels fly-half Danny Cipriani has returned to training after his suspension for repeated off-field disciplinary breaches was lifted by the Melbourne-based Super Rugby franchise.

Cipriani missed the Rebels' 40-3 defeat at the hands of the Stormers last weekend and was also axed from his side's recent fruitless two-week tour of South Africa having breached the club's disciplinary code.

The controversy prompted reports the fly-half had quit the Rebels but those rumours were dismissed last week, with Cipriani drafted back into the squad for Friday night's clash at Canberra Stadium. "Following detailed consultation between Danny Cipriani, his management, RUPA (Rugby Union Players Association) and the Rebels, it was resolved that Danny's current suspension will be lifted," the Rebels said in a statement.

"Danny has returned to training for the Rebels and will be available for selection in this week's game against the Brumbies. Both parties have agreed that no further public comment will be made and confidentiality will be respected."

Cipriani has experienced a rollercoaster ride since making a high-profile switch to Australia last year. He was fined after reportedly taking a bottle of vodka from a Melbourne nightclub, but also nailed a match-winning penalty in the Rebels' first ever victory, against the Brumbies, in February.

The 23-year-old played important roles in Melbourne's two other Super Rugby wins against the Western Force and Hurricanes, but poor defence saw him dropped to the bench. Cipriani then found himself in more hot water when he and team-mate Richard Kingi broke a team curfew after a loss to the Waratahs in Sydney in late April.

Earlier reports suggested that the Rebels, who are bottom of the Super Rugby standings with two rounds of the regular season remaining, had been pushing Cipriani to sign an updated contract with behavioural clauses.
