Matt Giteau's return to Test rugby has been brought to a temporary halt by a sternum injury which will see the veteran centre miss the Wallabies' Rugby Championship clash in Argentina.

GIteau was ruled out of the trip to Mendoza on Monday morning after suffering the injury in Australia's 24-20 win over South Africa in Brisbane on Saturday night. While scans showed no serious damage, the Wallabies made the decision to rest Giteau after a rugged return reintroduction to the Test rugby. Brumbies back Christian Leali'ifano has been brought in as a replacement following the additions of Nick Cummins and Nic White.

"I know how desperate Matthew was to play and continue to contribute to this group over the next week, his leadership and presence off the field will be missed," Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said via media release.

"He's one of the toughest members in the squad and we all witnessed during the match just how passionate Matthew is about representing his country again. It's disappointing to lose him for this round, however knowing he will be right to go for the Bledisloe series is reassuring for the group and our fans."

The 32-year-old Toulon star had enjoyed a solid out on his Wallabies return, particularly after replacement Matt Toomua was brought on midway through the second half.
