The Hurricanes have boosted their depleted back-line resources by completing the signing of former Crusaders ace Tim Bateman.

The versatile 24-year-old centre has been plying his trade in Japan for the past year with the Coca-Cola West Red Sparks but is now looking forward to returning home.

"I'm really excited about signing for the Hurricanes," he said. "We've thoroughly enjoyed our time here in Japan, but I've been looking to play at a more competitive level again and moving to the Hurricanes has given me that opportunity.

"I've played against the Hurricanes a number of times and I admire the way they play. I'm looking forward to moving to Wellington and being part of that environment and putting in some good performances for the team next year."

The signing is a massive boost for Hurricanes head coach Mark Hammett, who has seen Aaron Cruden, Piri Weepu and Hosea Gear leave the franchise in recent months.

"Tim is an exciting signing for both the Hurricanes and New Zealand," he said. "His decision to move overseas was based on family, but now he is looking forward to re-joining Super Rugby and to make his mark in New Zealand rugby.

"Tim is an exceptional character, strong leader and good student of the game. He offers versatility to our backline with his ability to play second-five, centre and first-five eighth."
