Peter de Villiers has criticised the South African Rugby Union (SARU) over their slow progress in appointing the new Springbok coach.

The 54-year-old, who led South Africa at last year's Rugby World Cup, has been kept on by the union as they search for his successor.

De Villiers is among the names on a shortlist for the post, reportedly along with Bulls boss Heyneke Meyer and Ireland coach Gert Smal, but he has stated that the new man will not have time to sufficiently mould a gameplan prior to the new season.

South Africa's first challenge of 2012 is a three-Test series against England, which takes place during the June recess of the Super Rugby campaign.

"It is already too late for the coach to sit down with the Super Rugby coaches," De Villiers told SAPA. "The appointment should have been made in December because we didn't have an overseas tour this time."

De Villiers also hit out at the timing of his contract extension - which runs until the end of January - as it has left him with few options on the table.

"Now there isn't any other work out there. Perhaps it would be better to say that they would no longer be making use of my services. It creates certain expectations," he said.
