Former Australia Sevens playmaker David Harvey has joined the Western Force on a four-game Super Rugby contract.

The 29-year-old has been drafted in to help cover fly-half and he could make his debut this weekend against the Waratahs. Should he impress he could earn a longer deal following a short stint with French club Narbonne.

The Force were left short of fly-half options after Willie Ripia quit the club in January following allegations of stealing from team-mates.

"There was an option to stay in France but, when I was contacted by the Force and there was a possibility of being able to play Super Rugby, it was an offer too good to pass up," Harvey told AAP. "There were never any guarantees but I have always worked to get the best from myself and held onto the hope that eventually an opportunity would come.

"I couldn't be more delighted. I know there is a lot more work to do but getting a foot in the door is fantastic and now it is up to me to show I belong here."

James Stannard is expected to remain the Force's first-choice fly-half. The Force will be without flanker Ben McCalman for the match against the Waratahs as he recovers from a shoulder injury suffered two weeks ago.
