The Waratahs will have to make do without Drew Mitchell for the Super Rugby regular season.

The Wallabies wing is struggling with a long-standing ankle injury and confirmed on Wedndesday that he will miss a further four months of action.

"So I now have some spare time on my hands, saw a specialist today who confirmed I'll be watching for another 4 months at least," he wrote on Twitter.

Mitchell suffered a dislocated ankle during a Super Rugby clash with the Reds last season and while he recovered to make the Australia squad for the Rugby World Cup - where he suffered a hamstring injury - the problem has continued to sideline him since.

He will also miss out on the Wallabies' June tour schedule, a one-off clash with Scotland and a three-Test series against Wales.
