Brumbies fly-half Matt Toomua has been ruled out for the remainder of the Super Rugby season, denting their hopes of securing victory in the Australian conference.

The 22-year-old playmaker suffered a torn cruciate ligament in Saturday's loss to the Sharks, having only just returned from medial ligament injury in the same knee.

Brumbies boss Jake White admitted that the franchise could have handled his return better.

"It's funny, in coaching you always have to make some risks and we say the biggest risk is not taking a risk," White told AAP.

"He was ready to go, but it wasn't the right call to bring him back this week. One never knows. The reality is maybe we rushed him back, but we did the same with [lock] Leon Power and he's just gotten better and better."

Meanwhile, Western Force lock Phoenix Battye has been cited for a dangerous tackle on scrum-half Will Genia during his side's thumping win over the Reds on Saturday.
