Israel Folau sidelined by ankle surgery for three months, ARU confirms

Israel Folau will be sidelined for three months after scans confirm he will require surgery on an ankle injury sustained at the Rugby World Cup.

The 2014 and 2015 John Eales Medalist played in all but two of the Wallabies' Rugby World Cup matches, but missing only the quarterfinal victory over Scotland due to the injury. He injured his left ankle during the Pool A victory against England and played through the pain the following weekend in the pool-deciding fixture against Wales the following week before missing the quarterfinal. He then to start at full-back in the semifinal before playing the tournament decider against New Zealand.

Despite being hampered by the injury for most of the tournament, Folau ran for more metres than any other Wallabies player and finished seventh overall with 366 metres gained in his six matches.

Folau has started and played in 38 Tests for the Wallabies, missing only the one match through injury, since making his debut in 2013,

Folau will not take up his contract with Japanese Top League club NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes. He will complete his rehabilitation in Sydney ahead of the 2016 Super Rugby season.
