It's likely to prove of little consequence but Wallabies star David Pocock says he's unsure as to the number he'll wear for the Brumbies in Super Rugby this season.

Pocock was one of the stars of Rugby World Cup 2015 in the unfamiliar position of No.8, after Wallabies coach Michael Cheika teamed him with Michael Hooper in a twin fetcher attack that helped drive Australia all the way to the final.

The 28-year-old back-rower had been a popular pick for Player of the Tournament until Dan Carter produced a fly-half masterclass in both the semi-final and final - highlighted by two freakish drop goals - to swoop in and claim the award.

Back in Canberra following an "off-season" that involved training with wildlife rangers in Zimbabwe, Pocock doesn't appear to be overly concerned by the number he wears at the Brumbies.

"I'm not sure, I'm not sure," Pocock said with a chuckle. "I don't know, I've been training at seven but who knows. We'll wait and see what Bernie (coach Stephen Larkham) thinks."

Seven looms as the most likely option for Pocock with Wallabies team-mate Scott Fardy - another World Cup star - certain to line up at No.6.

That would leave the likes of Jarrad Butler, Jordan Smiler, Ita Vaea and newcomer Michael Wells fighting it out for a spot at No.8.

There is no such uncertainty in midfield where Matt Toomua and Christian Leali'ifano will reprise their long-time roles in the playmaking hotspots of fly-half and inside-centre, giving the Brumbies the chance to bed down their attack before the season opener against the Hurricanes on February 26.

The squad will also be eager to perform in what will be Toomua's, and quite possibly Leali'ifano's, final season in Canberra.

"Yeah I don't think it's something that we're all talking about," Pocock said of the looming personnel departures.

"But I think we've got a lot of continuity from last year, a few new faces that will add different things to our game; so we're working hard to do as well as we possibly can.

"We were really disappointed to lose in that semi last year; so yeah all you can do is work hard in the pre-season and then take it from round one -- build from there."
