Summary

Time Score

It's a chilly day at Twickenham in South West London, as Martin Johnson's England side welcome South Africa. Johnson has kept faith with many of those that struggled against the Wallabies last week - with James Haskell coming in for Tom Croft and Tim Payne for the injured Andrew Sheridan.

South Africa have failed to set Europe alight so far on this trip - but don't forget, they are the World Champions. Indeed this is a rematch of the 2007 World Cup Final in Paris, a game which South Africa ultimately controlled. Forget the concerns that South Africa are fatigued, and that England are a work in progress - it doesn't matter. It's fifteen vs fifteen and this will be tasty.

1 3 - 0

Short, grubber kick-off from Cipriani, Burger is alive to it, slides in to gather. England forwards pile in and win the penalty at the ruck. Cipriani lines it up, 40m out, pretty straight. Great kick

2

Jantjes restarts long and high - straight out. England scrum

3

Scrum reset a couple of times on halfway. Freekick England. Care is away, play moves to the left touchline, as England gain 10m. Back right, Monye kicks through, into touch on the SA 22

4

SA take comfortably and clear. Sackey takes, to Monye who brings it up on halfway. England pinged at the ruck for not releasing

5 3 - 3

Pienaar lines it up and it flies straight and true

6

England restart, SA return fire and Sackey knocks on under pressure from the chasing Habana

7

SA make a mess of the scrum, knocking on. Rees pours through, but they come back for the knock on

8

England penalty at the scrum - SA taking it down. Cipriani lines it up on halfway to the right of the posts. Right at the edge of his range

9

He gets a solid contact but its short. SA bang it long. Sackey takes on the SA defence and make a hlaf break. On to Cipriani who kicks, SA gather but are charged down by Rees, Habana gathers and touches down behind his own line

10

England scrum in the right hand corner. they got left, Noon has a goo but is stopped, back the other way, Flutey nearly through this time. More phases, but its static

11

SA hack through at the ruck. Pietersen chases hard and beats Armitage to it. SA have ball and men over. It's move left, Habana in acres of space, but Sackey steps up to snuff out danger

12

SA up the tempo and go on attack. England are a bit sluggish and make good ground

13

SA still have it and are in the England 22. Jacobs goes hard for the corner, flipped back inside, Borthwick is back to save the day. SA scrum 5m out

14 3 - 8

SA run a move, committing the defence, Rossouw gets hold of it and he powers over for the try at the posts

15 3 - 10

England restart and SA kick back. England back three a bit uneasy there, but get away with it. SA scrum, they kick to the left touchline, Sackey takes athletically and runs it back hard making 25m good stuff that

16

The defence is good though, not committing too many players. They get it back and attack strongly

17

they loose it at a ruck in England territory, England scrum. Back to Cipriani, who takes too long - charged down

18 3 - 17

Pienaar gathers and trots over for the try

19

England get hold of it from the restart and win the penalty just in the SA half. Care goes

20

England put pace on it. Cipriani to Rees to Haskell to Armitage. Armitage goes hard for the corner, but Botha of all people is there to force the England fullback into touch the right hand corner

21

England steal the line out and build the phases on the SA 22. Flutey darts, and then Payne hammers on

22

Penalty SA. Haskell for obstruction. Bit cynical that. Pienaar relieves the pressure with his kick

23

England lineout put big pressure on but Palmer gives away a pen as it breaks up

24 3 - 20

Solid kick from Pienaar. This is a big lead now

25

Exchange of kicks from the restart. Cipriani hoists, but its not deep enough, but SA make a mess of it and England win it back. Cipriani half charged down, but England regain

26

Play slows as England probe the fringes, Mears offloads well. England penalty and Cipriani lines it up again. Another tough shot this

27 6 - 20

Thats a better kick

28

Easter takes the restart, he's been solid this half. England kick and Jantjes returns fire. Armitage takes, but again it's a bit hesitant. Ruck formed and SA are penalised for off their feet. Mtawarira goes to the bin

29

Flood on for Flutey gives England different kicking options. England gather the restart, but it's Care that clears. Ball bounces and SA get hold

30

Turned over in midfield and England have it. Easter gets it at first receiver and kicks long. Interesting option that. SA kick back

31

Shaw is on and immediately makes his sizeable presence felt at the lineout. SA scrum

32

Pienaar puts up the bomb, with Armitage claims positively. England run it. Flood kicks, but Pienaar is back sweeping up on halfway

33

England scrum in midfield and they kick again. This time Cipriani for Noon, but Pietersen is there sweeping this time.

34

The game breaks up as SA try and run it, but the England defence pushes them back. SA penalty just inside their own half

35

Pienaar lines it up. This is a huge attempt

36

Hasn't got the legs. England clear long, and SA send it back. No one claims it for England. Haskell loses it, SA hack through, Monye is back to save the day, gets it clear

37

SA lineout taken slicky. Habana is worked into a gap, but England slow it down and their push defence sends SA backwards

38

Pietersen goes hard, but is dragged down, now Smit pummels away. England are just doing enough here, and get the turnover. Care clears. SA come back but again England come up with the ball

39

Worked left to Monye in a bit of space. He's up to halfway, kicks on, but it's straight into touch

40

SA lineout taken well, SA control it, and that's halftime

40

We're back underway. Play settles with a scrum on halfway. Care is pinged for feeding. The SA back row take it on

41

England make their tackles though and SA resort to the kick

42

De Villiers chases strongly and Armitage cannot take, over running that one. Knock on SA, England scrum. They shunt it well, and England kick for position into the SA half

43

SA kick it back, and England build the phases with the big men smashing away. Now they send it wide. Monye gets some space and goes hard, but Habana is across

44

Armitage takes it on, into the SA 22. England scrum

45

England spread it right with a clever move in midfield but the final pass isnt there. Sackey takes it on the bounce and goes hard for the line. De VIlliers is across and makes the try saving tackle

46

England still have the ball though and pound at the SA line. Awesome SA defence, simply incredible tackling. Care, Noon, Flood all go close but SA nick it and clear. Impressive stuff from the World Champs

47

England start all over again on halfway. Mears and Shaw try the offloading game, Mears effectively, Shaw statically. It breaks down and SA kick long

48

Long trundle back for Easter, who dabs down in goal. England 22 drop out

49

England get it back, but cant find composure. Flood pass straight into touch

50 6 - 25

SA have the line out and run a slick move in midfield. The defence is sucked in tackle Pietersen, who pops to Jacobs on a great angle. He's in behind, steps the fullback and outpaces the covering Sackey to score

51 6 - 27

Long way back for England now. Play settles from the restart with an SA scrum just in their own half. They kick, and Armitage takes well. Now England put pace on it, through Sackey

52

He makes 10, 15m down the right. Back to Cipriani, loose kick. Pienaar takes easily in his own 22, marks and clears

53

SA up the tempo again and England are starting to look ragged

54

Monye gets it near halftime and sets the ruck. England build, crabbing across the pitch on halfway

55

Good work from Shaw creates a bit of space, brought left, and Monye takes on the bounce

56

The Quins flyer has another go but SA as they have been all game are across. Tackle comes in, which looks a bit high. England penalty, Cipriani puts it into the corner

57

Shaw takes the lineout and England run it right. It's a bit sideways though and SA cut their men down. Half break from Care, moved right and again the final pass is wrong. Cipriani guilty this time

58

England attack again, Armitage to Monye. Huge tackle from Pietersen. SA pour though and absolutely cream England at that ruck

59

SA get it and clear long. Excellent kick from Pienaar, controlled and sensible

60

SA on attack in the England 22. England kick through at the ruck, but SA scoot back and mount another attack. Habana asks the question with a kick into the England 22. Armitage is back and does well

61

Ruck formed near the England posts, and Easter is penalised for squeeze ball. Easy shot this

62 6 - 30

England get hold off it, but it's a bit loose, with players upright and static.

63

Armitage gets hold of it on the SA 10m line, goose-steps, breaks round a ruck and is away. He chips and Jantjes blocks him

64

England take the scrum near the SA line. Easter picks up but is driven backwards. Hartley has a go, but is stopped

65

Januarie pounces, and gets it clear. Superb defence from SA again there

66

SA drive England back again, back to their own 22. Hartley throws in, not straight

67

SA go on attack - a rarity in this half - but are penalised for off their feet at the ruck

68

England nudge it up the touchline, win the lineout and Flood kicks well for position

69

England attack on halfway, string some passes left, but theyre not precise. Noon has a bit of space but it closed down. Swung back the other way and Sackey can't hold a simple pass

70

SA scrum just outside their 22. Kankowski brings it up athletically, he's stopped and SA kick

71

Bit of a lull in the game here. That is until Steyn ghosts through a gap. Screaming break from SA here, onto Habana who goes straight and feeds De Villiers who goes for the line, but England through Armitage and Ellis get back

72

SA recycle and Burger goes for the line but England nick it back and Flood clears

73

England get hold of it near halfway but again the SA tackles rain in

74

Armitage gets it, but nothing is on, so he kicks to the lefthand corner

75

More territory and ball for England. Monye chips, Januarie is back who kicks back, Cipriani has it in space, poor pass hits the deck

76

England regather though. Stevens knocks on three yards out. Steyn boots long

77 6 - 35

Fourie beats a retreating Sackey to it and is away. Armitage half stops him, Fourie is up again and over

78 6 - 37

It's a shellshocked Twickenham that digests the fact this is now England's heaviest ever defeat at home.

79

England go through the motions but Januarie is still there chivvying and prompting, as he is announced as man-of-the-match. Match winds down in the England half. SA penalty

80

SA go quickly, moved left, simple, through the hands rugby and Habana goes in the left hand corner. Ouch.

Conversion is missed but it's irrelevant. What a performance from the World Champions. Huge defence and ruthless attack. As for England? Not many positives at all. And next up the All Blacks. Don't expect Martin Johnson to be smiling anytime soon.
