Saffy became the first NRL player to cross codes and join the Melbourne Rebels in 2010. He had made his name in league with St. George Illawarra Dragons, having begun his career in union. Before finding his feet as a prop in the 13-man code, Saffy played Sevens for Australia while also turning out for Sydney University, the Waratahs Academy and Australia Under-21s.
