Profile

All Black wing Hosea Gear followed his brother Rico into the most famous rugby jersey of them all in 2008. The Hurricanes flyer made his debut in the Bledisloe Cup clash with Australia in Hong Kong in 2008, before being capped once again against the same opposition a year later in Wellington. He scored his first try for his country against England at Twickenham as New Zealand won 26-16 in 2010.

He made his breakthrough with North Harbour but moved north to Wellington as a 19 year old. In 2008 he broke Bernie Fraser's try-scoring record for the province with 14 tries in 12 appearances in the Air New Zealand Cup, while he scored another eleven the following season. He played age grade rugby for his country and was an impressive exponent of Sevens rugby - winning Commonwealth Games gold as part of an impressive 2010.

A Maori international, Gear featured in the 2010 June matches and his form earned him a recall to Graham Henry's All Black set up, where he finally made his mark, scoring five tries on their Grand Slam tour. Gear fell out of favour with the All Blacks during the 2011 Tri-Nations competition and controversially missed out on the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

However after suggestions of a move to Europe, Gear stayed in New Zealand and returned to the All Blacks set up during the 2012 Test series with Ireland.
