Jacques Brunel is a former French rugby player who went on to make his name as a coach.
Brunel made his mark as coach Colomiers, with whom he won the European Challenge Cup in 1998. He repeated this achievement two years later with Pau before being welcomed into the French national set-up. From 2001 to 2007 Brunel coached the forwards under France head coach Bernard Laporte.
Brunel helped Perpignan to the French Top 14 title in 2008/09 and they reached the final again a year later, only to be defeated by previous victims Clermont Auvergne. Perpignan struggled to maintain that run in the following season and, along with disappointing showings in Europe, Brunel departed the club in 2011.
Following the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand Brunel is named as the successor to Nick Mallet as head coach of Italy.
