Notchy Cottrell played 14 Tests for Australia between 1949 and 1952 as a hooker, captaining them twice against the 1950 British Lions. In 1999 he was named in Queensland's Team of the century and was described as "a skilful scrummager and determined tackler …it was said Nev played like a runaway train and was one of the best hookers to represent his country".
