SA Rugby has submitted the Southern Kings, based at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium In Port Elizabeth, as their entry for consideration as the 15th side in the expanded Super Rugby competition.
A combined Eastern Province, Border and South Western Districts franchise, the Kings were unveiled against the British & Irish Lions in May and were the only submission from a South African group.
Should they prove successful, the Kings would join the Bulls, Sharks, Lions, Cheetahs and Stormers in Super Rugby - although they would compete in the Australian conference.
The Australian and New Zealand Unions have received submissions from their own candidates, but are as yet undecided on which applicants will be forwarded to SANZAR for consideration ahead of the announcement, due in October.
"SA Rugby has accepted the Kings' submission and has formally asked SANZAR to consider the franchise for inclusion in the full-blown tender process," read a statement. "A combined Eastern Province, Border and South Western Districts franchise was the only organisation to respond to SA Rugby's call for the submission of "Expression of Interest" (EOI) documents."
