Exeter Chiefs are set to bolster their Aviva Premiership challenge by signing Wallabies flanker Peter Kimlin on a short-term deal.

ESPNscrum understands that talks are ongoing between the high-flying Premiership newcomers and the twice-capped 25-year-old forward although reports from Down Under suggest a deal is done.

Kimlin has recently returned to action with Eastern Suburbs following a year-long lay-off with nerve damage to his shoulder, an injury sustained while on a Brumbies development tour in France in 2009.

With the inaugural season of Super Rugby on the horizon it is likely that Kimlin's stay would be a short one to allow him to return for pre-season with the Brumbies, but a player of his quality would be another major boost for the Chiefs after they secured the signature of former Stormers wing Sireli Naqelevuki.

"Going from training so much, pretty much by myself down in Canberra, to having an opportunity to miss out on pre-season and play some consistent footy, I'm quite lucky I think," Kimlin told Sportal.

"It probably hasn't sunk in until I get over there and play some week in, week out footy which isn't going to be easy footy as well, it's going to be hard on the body which is what I need seeing I haven't played for 12 months."
