Exeter loan signing Peter Kimlin is heading back to Australia after suffering a knee injury in training.

The former Wallaby faces 12 weeks on the sidelines with ligament damage following a training ground collision with team-mate Paul McKenzie, cutting short his time with the Chiefs after only three first team appearances.

Kimlin will now return to Canberra and the Brumbies in order to work on his rehabilitation prior to the start of next year's Super Rugby campaign, having joined Exeter in order to get some much-needed game-time following a long-term shoulder problem.

"It's a frustrating time for Peter," Exeter head coach Rob Baxter said. "He came over and we anticipated him being involved in a bit more rugby.

"He had settled in very well and was a popular member of the squad - he's a good guy and a very good player.

"I think he would have featured a fair bit over the next few weeks, but these things happen. It was a training ground incident, he clashed with a player on his own team in a game of touch, and sadly that is it for him now."
