Glasgow Warriors have pulled off a significant coup with the signing of Crusaders back Sean Maitland, subject to a medical.

The 24-year-old back has been turning out for the Canterbury-based franchise in Super Rugby and qualifies for Scotland courtesy of his paternal grandparents. The flyer has put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at the Warriors until May 2015 and the news of his capture follows in the footsteps of their recruitment of Lions No.8 Josh Strauss.

Maitland has turned out for the New Zealand Under 20s and also the NZ Maori side in the past and head coach Gregor Townsend is delighted with his new capture.

"The back three is an area of the team where we already have a number of excellent options, and Sean will provide a further layer of quality as we enter another busy phase of the season," Townsend said. "His try-scoring record in Super Rugby speaks for itself, and he's also a player who has a big appetite for self-improvement. He will be a fantastic addition to our squad and will, I'm sure, be very popular with our supporters.

"It's another indication of our increasing profile of Glasgow Warriors that a player of Sean's ability and ambition sees us as a club where he can continue to progress."
