South Africa head coach Heyneke Meyer is to give Pat Lambie the chance to prove his credentials as a Test fly-half during their tour of the UK.

With recently promoted fly-half Johan Goosen left out of the squad due to injury, Lambie is in contention for the shirt with Elton Jantjies and Morne Steyn. The majority of his 17 Test appearances have been from the bench and Meyer has used him predominantly as a full-back option due to fears over his tactical kicking game.

However Meyer was impressed with the 22-year-old's development during the Currie Cup and is ready to hand the Sharks fly-half a chance to prove himself at Test level with the Springboks facing Ireland, Scotland and England during November.

"Pat will definitely be a contender there and I think he can be a great fly-half," said Meyer. "He is tried and tested at Super Rugby level and I want to use this opportunity to see what Pat can do at this level.

"For me it is very important at Test level that your fly-half be a good tactical kicker. I wasn't impressed with Pat's tactical kicking before and I asked him to work on that aspect.

"He showed me in the Currie Cup that he has done the necessary work and I have been very impressed. But having said that after this year I'm going to stick with two No.10s going forward to the 2015 World Cup."
