Blues coach Sir John Kirwan believes Sunday's game against the Bulls will be the most difficult for his side so far this Super Rugby campaign, saying the South African franchise will present a tough physical challenge.

"The Bulls are going to throw really different stuff at us, I think this is the most difficult game from a philosophy point of view," Kirwan said. "They have Morne Steyn, one of the best kickers in the game ... [so] our back three are going to have to be really alert. Their philosophy is to beat you up, at the ruck, at the tackle. They are going to kick high balls and they are going to be into us. There is going to be more pressure on us this week than we have had, so that's great."

The side has been working with All Blacks "scrum doctor" Mike Cron, the session timed with the Bulls game in mind.

Kirwan said he was ready for the different African philosophy the Bulls would bring, and the different pressures it would create for the Blues. "We need to step it up again," he said.

But with two wins already on the board, he said keeping his younger players grounded was equally important.

"Any great team will always be humble, will always understand they are not as good as they think they are," he said. "If we can keep that work ethic 'better never stops'; well if better never stops how can we get better from last week?

"There were four or five things we can get better at."

The Bulls proved too strong in the final stages, scoring 17 unanswered points to claim the victory
