Melbourne Rebels utility back Richard Kingi will miss at least six weeks with a knee injury sustained in the club's loss to the Southern Kings at AMI Park on Saturday.

Kingi and the club hoped initially that he would be able to continue playing, but he needs surgery on a lateral collateral ligament complex in his right knee and he may even miss the remainder of the season.

Rebels coach Damien Hill was disappointed for Kingi, a player he has coached since his arrival in late 2010.

"One of Richard's greatest strengths is his resilience," Hill said.

"He has shown this in the way he has worked his way back to form after the past month. We are all disappointed for him.

"At this stage we are unsure on his return, but knowing Richard he will do everything he can to put himself in the best position to return this Super Rugby Season."
