James O'Connor is likely to miss one or two Super Rugby matches after damaging his left sternoclavicular joint in Melbourne Rebels' round-13 loss to the Blues at Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday night.

O'Connor attended hospital for x-rays on the sternum injury that he appeared to sustain 21 minutes into the game; he played on only to be slammed onto his back four minutes later by Rene Ranger as the rampaging Blues star set up a try for centres partner Frances Saili.

Scans in Melbourne on Sunday afternoon confirmed that O'Connor had not fractured the joint, but still the playmaker is in doubt for the Rebels' match against the Stormers at AAMI Park.on Friday.

The injury is no longer considered likely to put him in doubt for the Test series against the touring British & Irish Lions, with an initial 25-man squad to be named on May 19.

The Rebels will also be without O'Connor's replacement, Angus Roberts, on Friday. Roberts left the pitch at Eden Park with a dislocated shoulder, but surgeons are yet to determine the full extent of the damage.

O'Connor was in good spirits on Saturday evening, taking to Twitter after the match to say: "Initial scans looking ok- nothing broken or internally damaged. Couple more scans tomorrow to tell full extent.. Feeling more positive tho."
