Super Rugby now enters a funny stage of the calendar. In a normal season, we'd be switching into June internationals mode - getting ready for the All Blacks to host France, and for the four-way face off in South Africa between the Springboks, Scotland, Italy, and Samoa.

Instead, with the British & Irish Lions on Australian soil, and their tour underway with a comprehensive 69-17 win over Western Force on Wednesday night, Super Rugby continues in Australia for this weekend only with two matches.

Friday, June 7

Brumbies v Melbourne Rebels, Canberra Stadium

19:40 local, 09:40 GMT, 19:40 EST, 19:10 CST, 17:40 WST

Head to Head: Played 5; Brumbies 4, Rebels 1

In Canberra: Played 2; Brumbies 2, Rebels 0

Last clash: Round 2, 2013 - Rebels 13 - 30 Brumbies, AAMI Park, Melbourne

Preview: The Brumbies can edge one step closer to the Australian Conference title with a win here; and bonus-point win will make them just that bit harder for Queensland Reds to catch, as well, given the points difference between the sides already near 100 points. That, of course, won't be a focus of the side in the heat of the battle on Friday night, but it is a factor of which Jake White and the team are well aware -and are striving to achieve if the opportunity presents.

The Brumbies will be without five Wallabies, aside from the injured David Pocock and George Smith, and White has also said that barnstorming loose forward Fotu Auelua won't be considered for selection. Auelua injured a shoulder against the Hurricanes in Canberra last week, and won't fully recover in time.

This is a big match for Nic White, at the end of a big week for the 22-year-old. After being overlooked as an injury replacement for the Wallabies - Rebels No.9 Nick Phipps was preferred - White trained with the Wallabies squad in Sydney on Tuesday, and was then unveiled on Wednesday as the Brumbies captain for this match. Following in the footsteps of Brett Robinson, George Gregan, Stirling Mortlock and Ben Mowen, White will become the Brumbies' youngest captain in the club's history.

Melbourne Rebels are also without their trio of Wallabies - Phipps, James O'Connor and their captain for most of this season, Scott Higginbotham, who has been ruled for the season and requires a shoulder reconstruction. Hugh Pyle and Jarrod Saffy are also missing, having picked up injuries in Brisbane last week.

The Rebels' backline, however, is essentially the same combination that toppled the Stormers and New South Wales Waratahs in successive weeks in May, when the halves pairing of Nick Stirzaker and Bryce Hegarty, particularly, impressed plenty with their respective passing games and game management.

The young Rebels pack might be in for a tough night, though, even with Welsh No.8 Gareth Delve returning to the starting side and resuming the captaincy. The absence of their two best forwards in 2013, Pyle and Higginbotham, will be massive. And even without Mowen and Wallabies front-rowers Ben Alexander and Stephen Moore for the Brumbies, the Rebels still have to contend with the likes of Scott Sio, Dan Palmer up front, and Scott Fardy and Sam Carter in the second row. Don't be surprised to see rangy lock/flanker Peter Kimlin running around at No.8, either.

Force v Waratahs, nib Stadium

14:05 local, 06:05 GMT, 16:05 EST, 15:35 CST, 14:05 WST

Head to Head: Played 10; Force 2, Waratahs 7, 1 draw

In Perth: Played 5; Force 0, Waratahs 5 (* Waratahs 3-0 at nib Stadium)

Last clash: Round 7, 2013 - Waratahs 23 - 19 Force, Allianz Stadium, Sydney

Preview: Western Force sniff a major chance to record their first win over New South Wales Waratahs in Perth, and that was the obvious thinking in resting key players from the match against the Lions on Wednesday night. Kyle Godwin, Chris Alcock, Pek Cowan, Heath Tessman, Sias Eborsohn, and a host of others were held over for this match, potentially depriving some of their only chance to play the British & Irish Lions in their career.

Michael Foley defended his right to rest players, citing player welfare concerns. "There was the Barbarians game at the weekend which could have been a Force game. At the moment there's a big push in getting more games which creates stress on the players. Player welfare is a significant factor that needs to be considered when you make these decisions," Foley said before his team faced the Lions.

On the other side of the coin, the Waratahs have had to name a near club rugby representative side, to counter the 16 players unavailable to Michael Cheika due to injury or Wallabies squad inclusion. Flanker Pat McCutcheon, who only regained his place in the side last week, will captain the Waratahs for the first time.

Named in place of the swag of missing players are lock Ollie Atkins, making his Waratahs debut, and Will Skelton, Lopeti Timani and Jed Holloway, making their first starts of the season; hooker Damien Fitzpatrick may also return after 15 months out with a serious knee injury, having been named on an extended bench. The Waratahs named a 10-man bench on Wednesday, which included five players called up from the Shute Shield competition in Sydney.

Nevertheless, the Waratahs side as named looks quite solid on paper, with all seven of the backs having seen Super Rugby action in varying quantities this season, and a set of forwards that will still push the impressive Force pack all the way.

This should be a gripping contest, but the Force can prevail if they can turn around in reasonable shape from the Lions match.
