Former All Blacks prop John Schwalger will join the Hurricanes for the final three rounds of the Super Rugby season after injuries affecting the team's front-row stocks prompted a request to the New Zealand Rugby Union for him to be made available having completed a second season with French club Agen.

The Hurricanes were given the green light, but Schwalger, 29, is a returning overseas player so will need SANZAR clearance to contest the play-offs if the ninth-placed team qualify.

The loose-head, who played 75 matches in six seasons for the Hurricanes before leaving for France in 2011, has signed with Wellington Lions and the Hurricanes through to 2015. He played in the non-competition match against the Crusaders in Levin on Friday, and is available to face the Chiefs in Hamilton this week.

Samoan-born Schwalger collected All Blacks caps in Tests against Canada in 2007 and Ireland in 2008.

The Hurricanes, meanwhile, confirmed that inside centre Tim Bateman won't play again this season after sustaining a knee injury in a club rugby match. Bateman played in the Hurricanes' first 12 games of the Super Rugby campaign, starting 11.
