Hika Elliot trained with the Chiefs on Tuesday, giving the hooker cause to hope he can resume his playing career with the back-to-back defending Super Rugby champions after a serious neck injury.

Chiefs assistant coach Tom Coventry that Elliot and the franchise had not made any decisions about the player's short- and long-term rugby future after undergoing spinal fusion surgery.

"Hika's seeing our medical staff and he'll see his surgeon in a couple of weeks' time," Coventry told Radio Sport in New Zealand. "So we'll get a heads up about where he's at in the next couple of weeks, and then make an accurate decision."

Coventry, meanwhile, said that Robbie Fruean had not yet been cleared to return after his heart surgery. Coventry said that Fruean, who signed for the Chiefs from the Crusaders, was not yet in contact training but his fitness and conditioning were good.
