Force focused on sharper attack

Sam Wykes will captain Western Force in the absence of Matt Hodgson through the opening rounds of the Super Rugby season.

Force captain Hodgson who will miss the opening eight weeks of the season after sustaining a hamstring injury in the 38-19 pre-season win over the Asia Pacific Dragons in Perth on Saturday.

Wykes, a second-rower, has played 74 matches in seven seasons for the force. He was named to replaced Hodgson from a leadership group that include Pek Cowan, Patrick Dellit, Kyle Godwin, Alby Mathewson, Ben McCalman and Luke Morahan.

Force coach Michael Foley, meanwhile, is confident the team will cover for Hodgson's absence. "This is obviously disappointing for 'Hodgo' but we'll take a conservative approach with his rehab to ensure he doesn't re-injure," Foley said after the injury. "In Matt's absence, we have a number of quality back-rowers capable of stepping up, including Chris Alcock, Brynard Stander and Kane Koteka."
